Transmission repair

Transmission repair in Philadelphia

Your car’s engine creates plenty of horsepower, but it’s only when it’s paired with a functioning transmission that you can drive. The transmission converts the engine’s constant rotation into usable energy and allows you to shift between gears smoothly. It’s filled with a high-quality synthetic transmission fluid to keep it cool and lubricate the internal gears, clutches, and other metal parts inside.

However, it’s possible for problems to occur with a transmission if it isn’t properly maintained – and the average auto repair shop might not be able to help. At Xavier’s Auto Center, our ASE-certified technicians are experienced in transmission repair and replacement to keep you driving in Philly.

What causes a transmission to fail?

An automatic transmission uses a torque converter to allow your vehicle to essentially disengage with the engine at idle. Inside, several gear ratios can be selected to move your car forward, as well as a single gear to drive in reverse. Other parts including planetary and sun gears, clutches, the valve body, and solenoids help control which gear is selected and how the power is transmitted. It’s all bathed in the fluid to keep it cool, and the valve body uses it as hydraulic fluid to make the transmission shift.

In a vast majority of cases, a fluid leak and poor maintenance are the causes of failure. Symptoms usually start as unusual shift flares, higher RPMs, and a clunk when engaging in gear. You might smell burning too, which is a sign that repair is necessary or imminent. In many situations, the Check Engine light will come on with transmission-related codes.

It’s also possible for a sudden failure or the clutches to wear out over time. Whether your car suddenly won’t drive or you notice a slip or flare, you’re going to need a transmission repair.

How long does transmission repair take?

Unfortunately, a transmission repair is a time-consuming process. The complete assembly usually needs to be removed and assessed. A transmission rebuild often can keep costs a little lower but it takes more time. A rebuilt transmission often takes two days or longer. A transmission replacement trims the time required, and a remanufactured transmission can be installed in a day, in most cases.

How much does it cost to repair a transmission?

For transmissions, repairs cost quite a bit more than most people are prepared to spend. You can expect to pay as little as a few hundred dollars if it’s repairing a fluid leak, or several thousand dollars for a transmission replacement. Much of the cost depends on whether you’re rebuilding or replacing the gearbox.
