Car Battery Service

Car battery service in Philadelphia

More systems in a car require a constant electrical source than ever before. It’s necessary to get the engine running, power up control modules, and provide reference voltage for dozens of sensors and systems. A healthy battery is a requirement to operate your vehicle, and over time it will be necessary to have your car battery serviced or replaced.

When your battery needs attention or there’s an issue with the starting and charging systems, Xavier’s Auto Center is an excellent choice in the Philadelphia region to book an appointment. We work on all makes and models, and our technicians have the training and expertise to get you running properly once again.

What role does the car battery play?

Contrary to popular belief, the battery doesn’t solely provide power for your whole car. Its main role is to store up enough energy to start your car and operate electrical systems and accessories when the engine is off. The draw on the battery is incredible – around 250 amps while the engine is turning over – because the starter has to turn a heavy rotating mass.

The extraordinary draw on the battery is also why battery cables need to have excellent contact with the battery terminals. If the terminals are dirty or loose, minimal amperage can be transmitted through them. It would be like trying to suck a milkshake through a coffee stir stick.

How do you know it’s time to get the car battery serviced?

How long do car batteries last? There’s no set expiration for a battery, but the typical lifespan is between three and five years before it needs to be replaced. You can extend battery life by keeping it fully charged and promoting healthy driving habits like running the engine for several minutes before shutting it off, but it will eventually need to be replaced.

Most drivers know the signs of a weak or dead battery:

  • Slow cranking
  • Dim lights
  • The engine won’t start
  • Intermittent electrical issues
  • Slow power windows and other devices

A failing battery can leave you stranded no matter what the season. If you suspect your vehicle’s batteries are less than optimal, it’s time to get a service technician to look into it.
