Driving in the summer heat with cold air blowing through the vents is so refreshing. But did you know that a car’s air conditioning will lose its effectiveness over the years, even if there isn’t a physical leak? If your vehicle’s A/C isn’t blowing as frosty-cold as it used to, it could be that there’s a problem that needs to be repaired, or it might simply need an A/C system recharge.
Whatever’s wrong with your car’s air conditioning, have it diagnosed and fixed by the service experts at Xavier’s Auto Center. Our team has the skills to find the problem and correct it, getting you back on the road and keeping your cool.
How the air conditioning system works
Your car’s A/C system operates much like the engine cooling system, but in reverse. The system is filled with a high-pressure refrigerant that absorbs heat at the evaporator in your vehicle’s dashboard. The slightly-warmed refrigerant then cycles to the compressor that forces it into the condenser. It’s in the condenser that the refrigerant releases the heat and continues its way to the expansion valve and receiver drier before starting the cycle all over again.
As you can see, the A/C system has several parts and each contains seals to keep the pressurized refrigerant on the inside. When it’s working properly, it’s extremely useful at not just cooling your car but also removing moisture when you’re driving in humid, snowy, or rainy conditions.
Common problems with vehicle A/C
Although the A/C system is typically reliable, it’s possible for any of its parts or seals to fail. Refrigerant leaks out and the ability to cool your car is compromised. Even without a part that needs to be replaced, refrigerant can very slowly seep out – as much as 20% over four years is normal. Common issues include:
- Compressor failure
- A damaged condenser
- Leaking evaporator coil
- Leaking seals
- Plugged receiver drier
- Stuck expansion valve
If your A/C is working poorly or has quit altogether, it will need a professional’s touch to get it back in order.
