Hybrid Auto Repair

Hybrid auto repair in Philadelphia

More vehicles than ever have a combination of a gas-powered engine and an electric motor. Carmakers have embraced this hybrid powertrain as a highly effective way of making cars more fuel-efficient. You’ll see hybrid systems including plug-in hybrid in many cars, small SUVs, minivans, and even trucks. To keep them running well for years to come, hybrid auto repair and servicing are necessary by a qualified shop.

In the Philadelphia area, Xavier’s Auto Center is the perfect choice for your hybrid auto repairs and maintenance. With the specialized equipment to service hybrid vehicles and the certified and experienced technicians to get the job done right, you’re in great hands here.

What’s a hybrid system all about?

For a normal gas or diesel-powered vehicle, the engine’s flywheel rotates the transmission to propel the vehicle. A hybrid vehicle does it differently. An electric motor is added to the powertrain that can either supplement or replace the gas engine to power the car. The two systems can switch seamlessly while you’re driving to provide the performance you need on the highway or under load that a gas engine provides, along with the ultra-efficient electric-only power at city speeds from the electric motor.

Powering the electric motor is a battery that stores energy – a battery much larger than the usual battery under the hood. It can be recharged through regenerative braking or your car’s charging system.  For plug-in hybrids, it can also be charged through household plug-in power.

Is hybrid auto repair different from normal engines?

Although hybrid vehicles are more common than ever, it requires the utmost safety and care to service hybrids. High-voltage systems can be dangerous without protective equipment, which is why only certified hybrid technicians should work on your vehicle.

Hybrids are more efficient than a traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle, but they require maintenance the same way. The gas engine requires oil changes, the steering, suspension, and brakes still experience wear, and electrical faults can still occur. As well, there can be issues with the hybrid battery as time wears on.
